Mayor Michael Bloomberg held his last bill signing Monday — while his opponents literally lit up cigarettes in the City Hall Blue Room as Bloomberg signed a ban on indoor use of e-cigarettes and other measures on his next to last day in office.

Mayor Bloomberg, by reported accounts a generous politician who paid for extras for his staff and for constituents, signed a bill on Monday banning the use of controversial and unregulated e-cigarettes indoors.

The New York Daily News reports that Bloomberg actually signed 22 bills into law on Monday, bringing his total to 833 during his 12 years as the Mayor of NYC. Bloomberg also signed into law a ban on Styrofoam.

New York City native Jason Levine, Ph.D., President and Executive Director of The Source Health and Wellness Treatment Center is a vociferous opponent to e-cigarettes as well as traditional tobacco products.

He spoke to Monsters and Critics this morning to laud what parting legislative gift Mayor Bloomberg gave New Yorkers:

He said, “Kudos to Mayor Bloomberg for taking a leadership position by curtailing the ease of use for a highly addictive drug delivery system called the e-cigarette. Los Angeles and Chicago are likely to be next to take this step in January.”
