Buttock Augmentation Safety
With 2 deaths in recent months making headlines, it’s important to identify how to be as safe as possible when undergoing buttock augmentation.
There has been concern recently regarding deadly buttock augmentation procedures performed using silicone injections. Claudia Adusei, a 20 year old student from London, traveled to Philadelphia where she underwent injections of silicone into her buttocks hoping to add volume and create the much sought after figure now popular. The injections were performed in her hotel room and she died a day later. The procedure is believed to have been performed by an unlicensed person who CNN reports is a transgender hip hop singer.
Dr. Constantino Mendieta, a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in buttock augmentation procedures, said in an interview with CNN that patients need to research their physician and facility before undergoing any procedure. “These were being done by non-medical people, not people that are licensed,” he said.

There are methods of gluteal augmentation that, when performed by an experienced professional, are relatively safe procedures. One option is fat transfer often called the Brazilian Butt Lift. As Dr. Mendieta tells us, “The Brazilian Butt Lift is transferring fat from one unwanted area of the body to an area where we can help create and sculpt a more voluptuous rear end.” Instead of using an implant, Dr. Mendieta performs a fat transfer where the patients own fat is removed via liposuction and then re-injected into the buttock area to create a fuller, shapelier behind.
Researching your physician, procedure, and treatment center is incredibly important. Saving money is never worth risking your life and you should always seek out a qualified, licensed physician and treatment location.
