Allison Janney picked up another Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in CBS’ hit series “Mom.”

Allison Janney is an accomplished, seven-time Primetime Emmy winner. Her latest win for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy came last night (Sunday) at the awards show, and it was also a tip of the hat to showrunner Chuck Lorre’s series “Mom.” Continue reading

September Is Suicide Prevention Month; Veterans Still High Risk

President Barack Obama signs the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, which calls for evaluation of existing mental health and suicide prevention programs and expands the reach of these programs for veterans.

September is suicide prevention month and September 10th was world suicide prevention day.

People observed World Suicide Prevention Day on Sept. 10th to raise awareness about and reach out to those affected by suicide. Continue reading

What the New Normal for Retirement Looks Like

Nick Pronovich has three words for anyone thinking about retirement: “Don’t do it.”

The 74-year-old found himself forced into an early retirement in 2001 when his job was eliminated as a result of that year’s recession. He spent the next year doing freelance work and trying to find a new position but soon learned it was hard for someone pushing age 60 to compete with 30-something job applicants. In 2002, after a career in advertising that spanned 40 years, Pronovich hung up his hat for good and decided to make his retirement permanent. Continue reading

California’s “Real McCoy” is Turning 100!

While Malibu is famous for its warm sandy beaches, plenty of residents in the “Bu” spend cold winter days on the slopes of Mammoth Mountain. In August, the man who built that ski area is turning 100. Dave McCoy defied his critics who said the mountain was too remote, too cold, and too alpine to ever be home to a popular ski resort. But, with the help of a small group who believed in his vision, McCoy turned Mammoth into one of the top skiing destinations in the country. McCoy says the people in the Eastern Sierra “are resourceful, dedicated and adventure loving. It makes waking up every day a new experience.” Continue reading

Amanda Peterson’s Unnecessary Death A Cautionary Tale, Says Addiction Expert

Dying of drug addiction or any addiction issues in your early forties is a tragic thing. The news of “Can’t Buy Me Love” star Amanda Peterson’s premature death due to a cocktail of prescription and other drugs is a learning moment for anyone reading this who dabbles and combines opiates and alcohol, or various pills to manage stress or simply for recreation.

Peterson died July 5. She was 43 years old, married and living in Greeley, Colorado, where she grew up.  Peterson reportedly died of an accidental morphine overdose, according to anautopsy report from the Weld County, Colorado, Coroner’s Office.  But morphine was one of several drugs she had ingested. According to the Weld County Coroner in Colorado, Peterson had a variety of prescription drugs in her system, including benzodizepines (anti-anxiety meds), opiates and phenothiazines (an anti-psychotic medication). She also had marijuana in her system.

Peterson was prescribed multiple medications at the time of her death, including the pain medication gabapentin for a hysterectomy. Continue reading

When Kathy McCoy started taking a new blood pressure medication, she felt a little dizzy, so she asked her husband to drive her to work.

Over the next few days, her dizziness subsided, but then McCoy got fatigued and turned very pale. She called the physician who’d switched her meds, who told her to stick with the medicine, verapamil (a calcium channel blocker), for another week. Continue reading

Vester Lee Flanagan, the former TV anchor known as Bryce Williams, killed two journalists during a live broadcast on Wednesday morning in Virginia before shooting himself.

The 41-year-old shot Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, in cold blood at close range while Parker was conducting an on-air interview for WDBJ, a CBS television affiliate in Roanoke, about 240 miles south-west of Washington. Continue reading
