Mama wants: A tight core! ‘Coregeous’ DVD delivers wealth of benefits

Mama wants: A tight core! ‘Coregeous’ DVD delivers wealth of benefits

The first time you meet fitness guru Jill Miller, you feel the energy radiating off her fit and toned frame. Her always full-to-capacity classes at the Equinox clubs across the country are one of the best investments you can make.

Miller uses medical terms in familiar context to explain what you are doing in class, and by the end of a session, you feel smarter, immersed in a great educational experience and certainly more aware of what you’re doing with your body at any given moment. She teaches you to respect your spine, health and precious mobility.

Jill Miller’s tutelage in the art of pain management and core strength (her coined term “core-so” will work its way into your vocabulary) will readjust how you approach your fitness routine. Miller will have you preaching her Gospel of Proprioception, the body’s ability to sense movement within joints and joint position, mastering your body’s blind spots, to your Yoga and Pilates instructors who may not be aware and pushing too hard to do the “pose” instead of understanding the inherent dangers of an aggressive workout.

She believes you don’t have to beat yourself up to get fit, and her new DVD, ‘Coregeous,’ is one exercise tutorial that every Yoga, Pilates and fitness trainer should have in their arsenal of continuing education.

It’s revelatory, and done in the classic Jill Miller style of taking big, complicated subjects with hard to pronounce words, breaking them down in completely easy to follow instructions.

Equal Parts Sweet And Seductive; Spotlight on Singer-Songwriter Casey K.

It takes Los Angeles singer-songwriter Casey K. two hands to count her music influences: jazz, Motown, musical theater, reggae, Joni Mitchell, Sarah Vaughn, Janis Joplin and more.

CaseyK1She’s also been compared to Nora Jones, Fiona Apple, Colbie Caillat and Erykah Badu. But somehow she makes this myriad mix work in “In Tine,” her tightly produced new debut album, that showcases her smoky, sexy vocals that are equal parts sweet and seductive.

The video from the record’s first single, “Maureen,” shot on location in Paris, already is burning a trail on YouTube. The video explores the notion of love at first sight, an imagination running wild, mesmerizing until the very last scene:

Her first club date in support of the record, at Los Angeles nightclub The Mint, elicited this critique from Corey Irwin of Music Connection (the highly regarded music industry publication):

“A true vocal talent, Casey K.’s voice is remarkably dynamic. She has an enviable ability to belt out emotive lyrics, then quickly drop down to quiet, hushed tones for a somber moment in a song…. At the end of the set, the audience rose in unison for a standing ovation. If she can keep performing at this level, Casey K. should get used to them…. A talent like this doesn’t stay hidden very long.” wrote Irwin

That, my friends, is called hitting it out of the ballpark.

‘Celebrity Rehab’ with Dr. Drew Pinsky ends run, addiction specialist speaks out

‘Celebrity Rehab’ with Dr. Drew Pinsky ends run, addiction specialist speaks out

Dr. Drew Pinsky’s track record for treating addicted celebrities on his VH1 reality show “Celebrity Rehab” was less than perfect He announced that he was ending “Celebrity Rehab” because of the “heat” directed his way following the deaths of celebrities he treated.

“Celebrity Rehab” aired for six seasons, from 2008 to 2012.

Pinsky, who was interviewed by Zach Sang and the Gang said he was “tired of taking all the heat” following the deaths of celebrities who had appeared on his VH1 shows “Celebrity Rehab” and spinoff series “Sober House.”

All in all, five celebrities who were booked talent on these shows died in the years following their appearances, despite Dr. Drew’s best intentions.

The dead include troubled country singer Mindy McCready, “Taxi” star Jeff Conaway, rocker Mike Starr, “Real World” star Joey Kovar and Rodney King. None of their deaths were ever linked directly to the show or to Dr. Pinsky but were related in different ways to their health compromised by their inability to get clean and sober.

“It’s very stressful and very intense for me,” Pinsky said about the criticism leveled at him following each death. “To have people questioning my motives and taking aim at me because people get sick and die because they have a life-threatening disease, and I take the blame? … Rodney King has a heart attack and I take blame for that?”

“I don’t have plans to do that again,” he said. “I’m tired of taking all the heat. It’s just ridiculous.”

In the radio interview, Dr. Drew defended his record of success in treating the celebrity patients who appeared on his shows. “It’s sad that we’re not doing more shows because people did get help,” he said. “A lot of people are sober because of ‘Celebrity Rehab’ who wouldn’t have been sober without it.”

Board certified internist Dr. Damon Raskin is also an addiction specialist for Cliffside Malibu (www.cliffsidemalibu.com), and frequently comments on celebrity stories posted on M&C.

“This show was clearly not about helping patients get better, but about entertainment. Unfortunately, these were real people’s lives at stake who weren’t getting the proper care for their addictions. Part of successful addiction treatment involves confidential counseling to get to the root of the underlying issues that perpetuate the drug or alcohol use. This cannot be done on a television show such as this, says Dr. Raskin.

Lindsay Lohan FINALLY Checks Into Rehab

Lindsay Lohan FINALLY Checks Into Rehab

She’s back in a place she knows well — Betty Ford Center.

After a dizzying day of drama, Lindsay Lohan finally checked into rehab late Thursday, narrowly dodging arrest.

The Betty Ford Center is the same place the 26-year-old sought help in 2010 and famously made headlines when an employee went public with claims the actress was “out of control” and had alcohol on her breath during a tussle between them. A police investigation followed.

Lohan ended up in Betty Ford after rehiring lawyer Shawn Holley and firing her previous one, Mark Heller.

The troubled starlet apparently begged Holley to return, and the lawyer, who appears to be a glutton for punishment, agreed and worked “all night” to get the actress into Betty Ford, sources told the Daily News.

A World of Hurt: Why You Need More Than Painkillers to Feel Better

A World of Hurt: Why You Need More Than Painkillers to Feel Better

Painkillers like oxycodone are harder than ever to get—which means that if you’re dealing with chronic pain you’ll have to come up with something else.

Sharon Harris was barely out of college when she got a devastating diagnosis: She had lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes pain, inflammation, and damage to various parts of the body. Harris’ doctors limited her pain-relief drugs to over-the-counter versions, so she soon figured out she had to find other ways to cope with “flares” when her symptoms worsened. “I’ve always been skeptical of taking medication [so] I enlisted the help of yoga and massage experts,” remembers Harris, now 34 and living in Detroit. “I read countless stories about how the two techniques helped minimize pain.”

Bajaj_ChronicPainAt the start, Harris found yoga painful and difficult to do, but over time it got easier. “Yoga encourages you to stretch muscles that you never knew you had,” she says. “It also pushes you to meditate and visualize ‘pushing out’ your pain using concentrated breathing techniques.” After a class Harris says she feels “renewed, more aware, and more relaxed,” adding that she goes for a massage once a month: “I carry a lot of pain in my back and neck; massages tend to alleviate those aches and pains.”

For many of the millions of Americans dealing with chronic pain—the American Academy of Pain Medicine puts the total at 100 million—Harris’ pain management program, which combines few or no drugs with alternative and mind-body therapies, isn’t at all unusual. One reason is that abuse of painkillers—especially powerful opioids like oxycodone—are becoming harder than ever to get, even if you have a legitimate reason to use them. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided against approving a generic version of oxycodone, which goes by the brand name Oxycontin. That means, among other things, that the price of this powerful narcotic painkiller will remain high.

A 10-Minute Solution to Erasing Tired Eyes

A 10-Minute Solution to Erasing Tired Eyes

Heavy bags under the eyes are an issue many women face but there is a treatment that promises to eliminate the problem in just 10 minutes.

By injecting filler into the eye bags, cosmetic surgeons say they are able to quickly fix that troublesome area under the eyes, known as a tear trough, with an in-office procedure that does not require anesthesia.

“Ten minutes later [post-filler], they [patients] come out and they don’t have dark circles under their eyes,” said. Dr. Alexander Rivkin, a Los Angeles based-facial cosmetic surgeon. “It lasts for two, three, four years.”

“It really is the fountain of youth for the eyes,” Dr. Rivkin said.

“Good Morning America” followed four women – Taryn Piana, Iya Ritchie, Esther Lira and Melissa Beretich — each seeking that “fountain of youth,” who decided to try the tear trough treatment themselves.

“What I’m hoping to come out with is to be able to go back to what I was doing four to five years ago and not wear makeup,” Beretich, 40, said prior to her procedure with New York City-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven Pearlman.

Ten minutes later, Beretich said she “absolutely” saw a difference in her eyes and felt no pain at all.

“What this treatment is doing is camouflaging the bags,” Pearlman said of the $600 to $1,000 treatment.

“For people who only have mild [eye] bags, it’s a way to stave off the need for surgery by filling in that hollow,” he said. “It’s not reducing the bag but you’re making it less visible.”

Esther Lira, one of Rivkin’s patients who tried the treatment, said she was never able to cover her bags with makeup that looked natural.

After her treatment, Lira, 42, like Beretich, said she could “see a difference.”

Iya Ritchie, 40, and Taryn Piana, 27, both of whom worked with Rivkin, were also pleased with the results of their trough treatment.

“It’s awesome,” Piana said.

Surgeons say the side effects of the treatment like puffy eyes and possible bruising will fade away within one week.

Fitness Expert Devises ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Injury Prevention Guide

Fitness Expert Devises ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Injury Prevention Guide

Every season, stars succumb to injuries on “Dancing with the Stars.” The latest victim is Mark Ballas, who revealed on Sunday that he suffered a lower back injury last week.

“While trying a lift, I compressed two discs in my lower back and could hardly move for two days,” Ballas said.

Now, fitness and pain expert Jill Miller (aka The Body Whisperer), has devised an injury prevention regimen for the celebrities participating in “Dancing with the Stars” … and those viewers inspired to follow in their footsteps. Dancing – whether it’s televised or not! – uses a very specific group of fascia (connective tissue) that can freeze up and cause injury if they’re not dealt with proper stretching and strength-building exercise.

Jill is a leader in the growing Self Care fitness movement, which involves self-administered therapeutic techniques to deal with everyday pain while staying fit. (Yes, we must exercise to stay in shape. No, we neither need to accept pain nor pops pills to deal with it!) Her technique focuses on the manipulation of “fascia” – the soft scaffolding of connective tissue that surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels and nerves that, in effect, holds us together. “Fascia maintenance: promises to be one the hot health and fitness story for 2013.

She is the creator of Yoga Tune Up®, which boast 200 instructors worldwide, and she is an elite instructor at fitness chain Equinox for whom she has created a curriculum for “Self Care” pain management certification.

She has been featured in Self, Prevention, Redbook, Yoga Journal, Women’s Running, Fit Yoga and on The Today Show; the Los Angeles Times calls her “kinetically arresting.

New ten-minute procedure promises to erase under-eye bags for up to FOUR YEARS – but would you risk blindness to remove those dark circles?

A bit of concealer used to do the trick, but now there is a more permanent solution to heavy under eye bags

daily_mail_rivkin1Promising to soften dark circles in just ten minutes, cosmetic surgeons are injecting filler into the eye bags for the new treatment that lasts two to four years.

Dr Alexander Rivkin, a Los Angeles based-facial cosmetic surgeon, said of the in-office procedure which does not require anesthesia: ‘It really is the fountain of youth for the eyes.’

The dermatologist-offered procedure called tear-trough fillers, where hyaluronic acid such as Restylane or Juvéderm is injected to make the eyes appear better rested, costs from $600 to $1,000.

daily_mail_rivkin2daily_mail_rivkin2bHowever injecting the eye area is not without risks. Surgeons say the side effects of tear-trough treatment range from puffy eyes to possible bruising, which usually subsides within one week.

But if the filler blocks a retinal artery, it can cause blindness.

Dr Julie K. Karen, a New York dermatologist, told the New York Times: ‘I think about this every time I do it.’

Four women who tried the treatment seemed genuinely surprised at the results.

daily_mail_rivkin3daily_mail_rivkin3bMelissa Beretich told Good Morning America: ‘What I’m hoping to come out with is to be able to go back to what I was doing four to five years ago, and not wear makeup.

After her ten-minute procedure with New York City-based plastic surgeon, Dr Steven Pearlman, Ms Beretich said she ‘absolutely’ saw a difference in her eyes and felt no pain at all.

Dr Pearlman explained: ‘What this treatment is doing is camouflaging the bags. For people who only have mild [eye] bags, it’s a way to stave off the need for surgery by filling in that hollow.

‘It’s not reducing the bag but you’re making it less visible.’

Meanwhile Esther Lira, one of Dr Rivkin’s patients who tried the treatment, said trying to cover her bags with makeup that looked always unnatural.

But after her treatment, the 42-year-old said she could ‘see a difference.’

Twenty-seven-year-old Taryn Piana, 27, was also pleased with the results of her treatment, describing it as ‘awesome.’

The Tao of Posture: One Woman’s Fight to Save You From Yourself

The Tao of Posture: One Woman’s Fight to Save You From Yourself

The TODAY Show featured one of the most celebrated fitness experts in the United States, Jill Miller, whose exercise philosophy is rooted in her own trial and error to wellness.

Miller’s path to enlightenment came through many obstacles, including overcoming bulimia, to become one of the most respected and called upon experts in anti-aging posture practice, pain management and her signature Yoga Tune Up® courses taught at Equinox fitness clubs across the country.

Miller educated the masses on the Today Show (April 29, 2013) on the curse of the modern age: The “C slump,” where gravity sucks you down and compromises your core muscles and your spine, causing everything from pain to incontinence as it ages your body before its time.

It doesn’t have to be that way. Miller’s approach is a high energy saturation of information presented in interesting and easy to follow snippets of physiology and anatomy that empower anyone in her audience to instantly improve their overall wellness.

Ban the Slump!

Our bodies like to take the easy way out. Gravity is irresistible at times, and it takes awareness and strength to maintain an organized upright posture, especially if your job involves sitting at a desk all day or other repetitive tasks.
