Beauty experts warn cold weather can age your skin so a local dermatologist shows us her signature method for turning back the hands of time.
Lu Parker reports on the KTLA5 News at 11 pm on 3/15/19.
With the beauty and skin-care market constantly evolving, it may be very tempting to try every new product that hits the shelves. From face masks to moisturizers, there’s not a day, week, or month that doesn’t go by where a new product isn’t marketed for all skin types. But just because there are so many products to choose from – each with their own benefits and promised results – does that mean you should try as many as you’d like?
Americans spent more than $16 billion dollars on cosmetic surgeries and procedures last year, according to a recent report. In this Health Smart, our Lu Parker finds a new minimally invasive facelift created in Southern California by renowned dermatologist Dr. Anna Guanche.

There’s a lot of misleading information out there, especially when it comes to fighting signs of ageing. Feel free to disregard these claims.
Asking a beauty professional–whether it’s a celebrity hairstylist, makeup artist, or Instagram influencer (hi, 2018)–for advice is always a safe bet. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find there are plenty of other women out there who are legitimate authorities in their own right. In our new column, Unlikely Experts, they’ll give real reviews and recommendations. Whether it’s surfers on the best conditioners, bikers on the best cleansers, or ballerinas on the best foot creams, it’s fair to say these women know best.
These products aren’t doing you any favors.
Giving your health a boost may be as easy as taking a deep inhale.
Essential oils may be considered an alternative health trend, but a growing body of research suggests that they may help prevent or even treat several health conditions, from insomnia to IBS symptoms.
There are some skin issues against which we fight since teenage years until late into adulthood. Problems like acne scars, dark circles around the eyes, and hickeys are annoying enough to make people spend a lot of money on cosmetic products but oftentimes they are not serious enough for you to actually search for medical help.
Just as you switch out your wardrobe from summer to fall, you should do the same with many of the products you rely on to keep your skin healthy and hydrated, namely your moisturizer. “The fall air is cooler and drier, so our skin needs more hydration to continue to glow,” explains Anna Guanche, MD, a dermatologist at Bella Skin Institute. Cranking up the heat also causes the air inside to become drier, making skin thirsty for moisture, she adds.
Popping and picking at blackheads can be tempting, but it’s probably not worth it. Not only can you cause damage to your skin, but also, blackheads aren’t as harmful to your skin as you might think.
“It is very tempting to squeeze blackheads. Blackheads are dilated pores filled with keratin, or dead skin cells,” Anna Guanche, board-certified dermatologist and beauty expert, told INSIDER. “When the cells dry at the top and are exposed to oxygen, they oxidize, turning black.”
Here’s why it’s time to stop messing with your blackheads, according to dermatologists and skin-care experts.
If you’re stocked up on SPF primers, foundations, bronzers, and beyond, we applaud your dedication to protecting yourself from the sun. But–sorry to disappoint–SPF makeup is just no substitute for real deal sunscreen.
Bringing a life into this world is an incredibly beautiful thing, but it’s also an enormous responsibility. From the second conception occurs, everything a mom-to-be inhales, ingests, absorbs and is exposed to can affect her developing baby. We all know to avoid drinking alcohol, eat healthy and stop smoking, but you also need to take a close look at the beauty and skin care products you’re using.
While some people with oily skin might think that using a moisturizer will make their skin even more greasy, it’s actually quite the opposite. Your skin is left dry after cleansing, so when you skip moisturizer, your body responds by producing more oil to correct the dryness. Finding the right oily skin moisturizer can be challenging. That’s why it’s important to select a moisturizer carefully, especially since you want to balance absorbing oil with keeping your skin hydrated.
Minimizing the appearance of dark spots doesn’t have to be a pain. There are easy ways to even out your skin tone and reduce dark spots. Dr. Anna Guanche, a board-certified dermatologist, told HelloGiggles that investing in the right products can alleviate this common skin problem. She added, “Sunspots will actually fade a bit with consistent sunscreen use. In addition, retinol used consistently with hydroquinone is the powerhouse of fading spots.”
Guanche says cashews, almonds, pistachios, macadamias and Brazil nuts are also excellent additions to a skin-healthy diet since they are packed with protein, fiber and unsaturated fats.
“These nuts aid in a glowing, smoother complexion, plus, the copper, zinc and vitamins A, C and E packed in each little nut promotes healthy collagen production,” she explains.
It’s totally common to be itchy from time to time. However, if the feeling sticks around, sometimes that itchiness can be a symptom a larger health issue. In other words, even something as small as a tick bite can turn into a serious infection, causing larger health problems down the line. For that reason, it’s important to check in with your body and recognize when itching might actually need extra medical attention.
Lasers. LED lights. Sonic vibrations. The at-home beauty world has gone decidedly high tech. New tools and devices are coming out seemingly every day, promising smoother, cleaner, firmer, brighter skin, and using techniques previously only available at a dermatologist’s office. Some of them, no wonder, cost a small fortune.
Derms rate their DIY competition
Due to some recent hormonal changes related to switching my birth control, I’ve started getting cystic acne. I remember when the first one popped up. To the naked eye, it was invisible. But I could feel it brewing underneath my skin, and if I accidentally brushed it with my fingertips, it hurt. Soon it turned into a full-fledged red, raised bump that basically had its own heartbeat and hurt all the time.
Cellulitis is a potentially serious bacterial skin infection that is most commonly caused by the Staphylococcus (staph) or Streptococcus (strep) bacteria, although other types of bacteria can also cause it.
Symptoms of cellulitis can start suddenly, with an area of skin rapidly going from normal looking to red and swollen.
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) has a bit of a rep on the internet–you can use it as a skin tonic, a natural household cleaner, digestion regulator, and even as a potential weight loss aid. It’s the ultimate does-it-all ingredient, and even if you don’t need it in the kitchen there’s another good reason to stock up: apple cider vinegar can be an elixir for your hair.
The beauty community has an unapologetic penchant for circling back and touting ancient hacks and secrets — and for good reason. Sure, we are eternally grateful for modern-day inventions that keep us looking svelte, groomed, and much younger than our years, but there’s also something to be said for techniques and ingredients that have worked brilliantly for countless decades.
Skin cancer is on the rise, especially among women. With that scary news has come a push to encourage people to wear sunscreen all the time–whether or not you’re sunbathing–and to pay attention to sneaky spots that are often forgotten, like the scalp. But there’s another area you’re likely missing: your eyelids. Yes, that’s right. You can get skin cancer on your eyelids.
While it isn’t a super common occurance–it accounts for just 10 percent of all facial skin cancers–skin cancer on the eyelids can be deadly if left ignored. Here, the important risk factors and symptoms of eyelid cancer, plus what to keep in mind to protect yourself this summer and all year round. (Related: How Often Should You Really Have a Skin Exam?)
There’s a kernel of truth to this whole “beauty rest” thing: During the night, your skin actually absorbs the nutrients in your products better than during the daytime, according to Parvaneh Rafaeloff, MD, medical doctor at Le Jolie Medi Spa. “Additionally, there aren’t environmental stressors at night (like environmental pollution and sun damage) while you sleep; products are able to better penetrate when you’re not wearing makeup while you sleep and the skin can breathe,” she adds.
If you’ve been scrutinizing that ink you got in your past, you’re not alone. One in 8 American adults regret getting at least one of their tattoos, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Fortunately for your younger self, there are ways in which you can go about erasing your once-permanent past decisions.
The ketogenic diet has become more mainstream over the past year thanks to celebrity endorsements from stars like Halle Berry, to the amazing before and after weight-loss transformations.
While there’s still much to learn about the low-carb, high-fat diet and how it affects the body, experts have found that the benefits are greater than weight loss alone.
Steve Phinney, MD, PhD, chief medical officer at Virta Health, told POPSUGAR, “Anecdotally, there are many stories of people having clearer skin, more energy, sharper cognition, and reduced symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
If you’ve ever experienced raw, red, or irritated skin between your thighs, then you likely know about the common, everyday problem known as skin chafing. But you may wonder, what causes chafing? “Chafing refers to the irritation of skin caused by repetitive friction, usually generated through skin-to-skin contact of multiple body parts,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Anna Guanche tells Bustle.
Judging by the number of its recent converts and passionate admirers, it’s safe to say that Asian beauty and skin care is not just a trendy, of-the-moment craze that eventually gets pushed aside as its viral status fizzles out. In fact, we have seen Korean beauty or K-beauty take the spotlight in the last couple of years. But that’s not all. In recent months, its Japanese counterpart, or J-beauty, has likewise landed itself on the radar of beauty and skin care connoisseurs. Now, we’re not here to join in on the great K-beauty versus J-beauty debate of 2018. Besides, why choose between the two when we can definitely benefit from incorporating both beauty philosophies into our own skincare routines?
Even if you slap a good eye cream onto your skin, it’s hard to know if it’s actually working. However, this is one important step in your routine that you shouldn’t skip. Dr. Anna Guanche, a board-certified dermatologist, told HelloGiggles that “eye creams work overtime to keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay.” She added: “These products help hydrate the skin to plump out fine lines, and it may even de-puff the skin if it has caffeine or actives similar to Preparation H.”
Dr. Guanche said that over the years, using eye cream will help prevent crepiness. And while procedures can give people faster (and more dramatic results), she noted that eye creams do work and can help to increase the longevity of the results. According to her, it’s important to use them no matter what.
This means that you should invest in an eye cream if you haven’t already. So to help you find the right product for your skin type, we rounded up our faves.
All sorts of routines shift during pregnancy, from what you eat to what you wear. This is true for your skincare regimen, too, particularly if it involves anti-aging products.
“Skincare in pregnancy can be tricky,” says Deanne Robinson, MD, a dermatologist and the president and co-founder of Modern Dermatology of Connecticut.
You may have heard a great deal about the keto diet in the news lately, especially since the diet is said to promote weight loss and have a positive impact on blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
However, you probably didn’t know that observing a low-carb and high-fat diet also has numerous effects on your skin, especially since some experts feel that the keto diet has both good and bad effects worth looking out for.

Tattoo removal procedures offer people the option to wipe out their unwanted inks by means of an in-office procedure. But how does the process work? What can you expect from a session? HuffPost chatted with experts on everything you need to know about undoing your tattoo. Here’s what you should know:
It’s safe to say that regardless of the season, there’s just no room for body acne (aka bacne) in your life. Not only does it put a damper on your plans for back-baring #ootds, it can also cause great physical discomfort. Not to mention, it can be particularly frustrating to treat especially when it sprouts in hard-to-reach places. And with beach season in full swing, even the clearest and most radiant of skins are not spared–thanks to all that sweating, product buildup and constant exposure to environmental irritants (and bacteria).
Fortunately, as pesky as body acne is, it’s also quite preventable and manageable. And the first step in treating body acne? Understanding what it really is.

Summer is in full swing, and more than a few of us have already dealt with a miserable sunburn. (Please pass the aloe.) On a good day, I fall into the category of “people who burn after 10 minutes in the sun,” but that’s because I’m simply sensitive to sunlight. It’s not uncommon to be sensitive to the sun, but approximately 10 to 15 percent of the population is allergic to the sun according to Harvard Health Publishing.
What are the true benefits of CBD oil for acne? Here, we have experts weigh in on this popular, new skin care ingredient. And yes, we also got the answer on whether you can get high from products with the oil in it.
Over the last year, and especially in the last six months, there’s been a lot of conversation surrounding CBD oil. It’s been touted as a supplement to help calm your pets, as a way to alleviate persistent pain in humans, and even as a potential treatment for acne. It’s also been heralded for its moisturizing and acne-curing capabilities.
SENIOR SUN SENSE
Many people think that skin cancer isn’t a risk after a certain age, but a lifetime of sun exposure can catch up to you at any age. Skin cancer comes in a number of forms, including basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas and the more deadly Merkel cell carcinoma, while melanoma causes the most deaths. What advice should seniors take to protect themselves? We spoke to experts about how to reduce the risks.
Selecting the right beauty products in the summer can be somewhat tricky, as the heat and humidity can definitely make choosing your go-to moisturizer, skin care and even fragrance a real challenge. We consulted top beauty experts (think celebrity makeup artists, waxing pros and dermatologists) to share the products they’d actually use themselves when the week-long heatwaves become practically unbearable. Here are some of the beauty products they recommend adding to your arsenal asap.
There are a lot of claims about DIY tricks that can improve hair growth, speed up your metabolism, or increase the negative ions in the air around you, but what does science have to say–what actually works?

If you’re looking to ditch the fake eyelashes and eyelash extensions, there are several methods for how to make eyelashes grow. Latisse lash serum is a popular solution to help you grow longer eyelashes, but studies have shown that it can cause irritation to the eye for certain people. The FDA warns that in addition to eye irritation, Latisse can also cause skin discoloration and even potentially change your eye color permanently. Yep.
Head to Sephora or your local drugstore and you’ll find near endless choices when it comes to skincare products. Moisturizers alone can take up a full aisle, and at online stores, there’s page after page to scroll through. Exploring these options can be fun–one of these products could be your new favorite cure-all, after all. But facing the wide expanse of moisturizers, sunscreens, and face washes available can also be a little overwhelming: Which of these lotions is the best of the bunch? Will that face wash with the pretty packaging lead to breakouts and post-purchase regrets, or will it truly live up to its claims and transform your skin?
Many of us just want to live a long and healthy life, and we try to engage in good habits to help us achieve this. However, we may unknowingly be participating in activities that might shorten our lifespans — turns out, there’s a number of unexpected things that might take years off your life. Most of us know that sitting too long, eating unhealthy food, and drinking and smoking can increase our risk of disease, but there are plenty of other seemingly innocent habits that can play a role in our longevity as well.
If there was one step in your morning beauty routine you would never, ever skip, we have a feeling you’d say it’d be your brows. There’s a reason why the phrase “brows on fleek” caught on like it did. Your arches frame your face, and they have the ability to totally transform the way your face looks.
If you struggle with acne, some of these DIY remedies might help.
You know that glow that people remark upon when you’re pregnant? Well, it’s a real thing! Board certified dermatologist and beauty expert, DR. Anna Guanche says that in 90% of pregnant women the blood volume increases by 50% (increased blood flow), estrogen levels increase (estrogen makes the skin more youthful looking) and weight gain all combine to create a beautiful smooth glow.
