Op Ed: The Tribeca Precedent and the Framing of Vaxxed

Houston_VAXXED_Protest-Feature

When the call came from the heads of the Tribeca Film Festival, specifically co-founder Jane Rosenthal and Tribeca Enterprises’ Executive Vice President Paula Weinstein, to let my head of distribution, Rich Castro, and me know that they had decided to “de-select” our film Vaxxed: From Cover-up to Catastrophe, I didn’t want to believe it.

I couldn’t understand how it could even be possible–when the selection had been confirmed publicly by Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro himself the day before. Continue reading

Robert De Niro is widely reckoned to be the world’s trickiest celebrity to interview. He will sit looking morose and mumble monosyllabic answers. Any question about his private life will be met with the sort of thinly veiled menace he provides so perfectly in his film roles.

But there is one subject, as painfully private and sensitive as one can imagine, on which he has been more than happy to talk in recent days — about how his 18-year-old son, Elliot, suffers from autism. Continue reading

After being booted from the Tribecca Film Festival in New York City, “Vaxxed: From Cover-up to Catastrophe,” a movie about a purported cover-up of a government study on the safety of the measles vaccine, opens Friday in Orange County.

Regency South Coast Village in Santa Ana will show the documentary for at least a one-week run. An evening screening Friday has already sold out.

Andrew Wakefield, a former doctor from Britain who has set out to prove there’s a link between the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, or MMR, and autism – a theory that is widely disputed – co-wrote and directed the movie. He also appears frequently on screen. Continue reading

Review: ‘Vaxxed,’ film that was pulled from Tribeca Film Festival

Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe is the documentary that, amid controversy, was pulled from the lineup of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. It asserts a link between the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps and rubella) and autism, particularly when given to children younger than 2 years old.

It is directed by Andrew Wakefield, the gastroenterologist whose findings in this area have been largely discredited by the medical community. So Vaxxed can be seen as Wakefield’s side of the story. Continue reading

SACRAMENTO (CBM) — Californians in the state Capitol have been afforded the opportunity to view the controversial film, “Vaxxed” that alleges the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention covered up data that the MMR vaccine may contribute to autism in children, specifically African-American boys.

The film, “Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe,” opened Friday night in Sacramento at the Tower Theater, not far from the halls of political power. Last year a serious debate occurred in the state Assembly and Senate regarding vaccinating children before enrollment in school. Continue reading

CHICAGO–Tears streamed down the cheeks of Maisha Muhammad as she spoke of her son Elijah, who started to exhibit signs of autism around his second birthday.

The infant had been doing so well, she told an audience May 7 at Mosque Maryam at the National Center, headquarters of the Nation of Islam. He had started walking at six months. The closer he got to two years of age he stopped responding to his name, she said haltingly. He stopped trying to talk. He would lay in his crib silent for hours.
